Evelyn M . Campbell 98, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on May 11, 2018
She was the beloved wife of the late William J. Campbell.
Evelyn, born in Manhattan, NY on September 8, 1919 to the late Marco and Lucia (Cardarelli) Saggese, spent her early years in The Bronx home her father built. A product of the prestigious NYC public education she graduated from Evander Childs HS (1937). She benefited from all NYC had to offer: movie houses, art, culture, fashion, swim clubs, city park stables and tickertape parades. Evelyn attended Baruch College for a year, leaving to help support her widowed mother.
Evelyn began her work life at the Hotel McAlphin in NYC (1938), where she met her husband Bill. Her next job, in Brooklyn, was checking submarine gyroscopes, 6 days a week, for the WW II war effort. On VJ Day, Evelyn and her cousin rushed to Times Square to join the famous WW II victory celebration. Postwar, Evelyn was geological plotter on Wall Street.
Evelyn married Bill in 1944 and they took advantage of postwar New York for ten years prior to their children’s birth. They settled in RI in 1958 and Evelyn was employed as a secretary at Providence College from 1961-1989. In retirement Evelyn volunteered at Meals on Wheels into her 90s.
Once the children were grown Evelyn and Bill toured Europe and North America. They were long-time members of Club Dominicana at St Pius. They enjoyed 70 years together until Bill’s death in 2014.
A classy and gracious “Lady of the Greatest Generation” Evelyn was erudite, adventurous, always optimistic, complaining rarely, thankful for her life. She carried immense devotion for her family and faith. We will miss her greatly.
Evelyn is survived by son Marc and his children Theresa and David and daughter Karen and partner Lynn, a multitude of caring and fascinated nieces and nephews including great and great-greats as well as numerous loving friends. Evelyn was the Matriarch of the family and the sister of the late Violet Ricci of
RI and John and Eugene Saggese of NY.
