Lora Maria Caruso Altman
January 18, 1941 - March 17, 2019
Funeral and Cremation Services
Lora (Caruso) Altman was born and raised in New York City, the daughter of Sicilian immigrants, Martino and Carmella (Battaglia) Caruso. She supported herself while earning a degree from St. John’s University, and then struck out for San Francisco, where in 1969 she met Dr. Herb Altman. Soon after, they were married. They spent fifty years together, living in Brooklyn, in Florida and then with Greg and family in Massachusetts.
Lora was loved dearly by her children, Drs. Greg and Rebecca Altman of Providence, RI and by (the late) Andrew Altman, who passed in 2009 and will be buried alongside her. She was beloved most especially by her grandchildren Gregory (11) and Matthew (8), whose early years were graced by her chicken cutlets and lasagna and her intimate presence in their day-to-day lives. She is also survived by her brother, Joseph Caruso of Vero Beach., Fl. A care-taker by heart, Lora embraced family, tending to those in need, including her mother, who lived to the age of 99, and when needed, her brother-in-law and brother. She was a confidant to her son Greg, always supporting him in his business ventures, and always the first investor.
She was a tireless advocate for children with special needs, particularly those served by Broward County (Florida) Schools and The Heartspring School of Wichita, KS. The last donation she made was to Special Olympics. Her final Facebook post honored The Wolf School in East Providence, Rhode Island, who specialize in the education of complex learners. Her legacy lives on in places made more accessible through her advocacy. She took solace from the ocean, and had been looking forward to relocating to Providence, RI, where she and Herb had planned to join Greg and Beck in the raising of their grandchildren. She is missed beyond words.
