Verne L. King, 92, passed away August 5, 2014 in hospice care at the Warren Health Center, Warren, RI. . A lifelong resident of Stratford, she had resided in Swansea, Massachusetts for the past three years with her son and daughter-in-law. Born in Danbury, Connecticut, she was the wife of the late Gerald G King, Sn. and the daughter of the late Vernon J. Elsenboss and Mildred Roswell.
She received a Bachelor of Science degree from the Boston University School of Business Management. She was employed as a journalist by Columbia Records and the Olin Corporation and was the Director, Communications and Community Relations for Warnaco, Inc. before her retirement in 1986. In 1978 Warnaco also named her President and Treasurer of the Warnaco Fund, Inc.
A respected community leader, she served on the boards of countless community organizations including the Rehabilitation Center of Eastern Fairfield County, the University of Bridgeport Board of Associates, the Regional Youth Substance Abuse Project, the United Way, Junior Achievement, the Bridgeport Economic Development Corporation, Barnum Festival Society, Inner-city Childrens Ctr., Bridgeport Public Schools Curriculum Advisory Council, and in 1979 was elected the first female chairman of the Greater Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce. She served as a director and member of the executive committee of the Mechanics and Farmers Savings Bank from 1976 to 1991.
She received many awards for her community service efforts including the Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary International Foundation award, Park City Hospital trustee award, Sacred Heart University Connecticut community leadership award, State of Connecticut Gen. Assembly citation, City of Bridgeport proclamation of appreciation, and the YMCA achievement in corporate communications and public affairs award. She was listed in Who’s Who in Finance and Industry Who’s Who in the East and Who’s Who of American Woman.
She is survived by her son, Gerald G. King Jr. and his wife, Patricia J. Listopad King, three grandchildren, Pamela Jayne King and her husband, Mr. Paul Levasseur of Swansea Ma., Ms. Kyle Amsler and Mr. Gregory Amsler of San Francisco California and one great granddaughter, her precious joy, Kelsea Levasseur King, and Mr. Terry Amsler of Indianapolis Indiana, husband of her late daughter Susan V. King Amsler. She is also survived by three nieces, Mrs. Lynn (Robert) Preto Rodas, Stratford, Ct., Ms. Sally Cawthra, Eureka Springs, AR and Mrs. Ingrid (Harry) Schwenger, Oxford CT.
A memorial service for family and invited guests will be held in Bridgeport on October 25, 2014. Private burial at Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport, CT.
