Dr. William L. Keith, 59, died on January 18, 2014 at his home in Ashaway, RI. Born in Naples, NY, he was the son of Martha Keith and the late Lawrence Keith. After graduating from the University of New Hampshire, he earned an MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, and a PhD in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Cornell University. Until shortly before his death, Dr. Keith conducted research in turbulent boundary-layer flow noise at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. Over the course of his career, he received nine patents and more than 50 special recognitions for his work, including the Decibel Award, NUWC's highest commendation for technical achievement in the field of sonar and underwater acoustics.

Bill was an avid fisherman and he and his wife spent most vacations at his family cottage on Canandaigua Lake. In addition to fishing and water skiing with his life-long friends at the lake, Bill enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests ranging from dogs, music, and film noir to amateur beer making. He traveled extensively both for work and pleasure and had a special fondness for Nice, France.

Bill is survived by his wife of 35 years, Elaine Caldarone, his mother, two aunts and eleven cousins. As per his wishes, there will be no visiting hours and a private memorial service will be held in Naples, NY at a later date.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to all his friends and caregivers who supported him through his months of illness. Memorial contributions in Bill's name may be made to the ALS Association, RI Chapter, 2915 Post Road, Warwick, RI 02886-3117 or online (webri.alsa.org). Condolences may be shared at the
