Thomas R. Harshman, 50, of Providence, died Tuesday, March 8, 2011, in Rhode Island Hospital of an infection related to diabetes. He is survived by his parents, Richard and Mary Harshman, his brother, Edward Harshman, and his sister, Cecily H. Johnston. He also leaves behind a loving extended family, a very wide circle of friends, and a caring community in academia.
Tom graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover in 1979 and earned his AB from Princeton University in 1985, having taken two years to participate in piano competitions. Despite considerable success, he decided to use his musical gifts by teaching piano and performing occasionally.
He earned his Ph. D. in English from Brown University in 1995. Discovering that he loved teaching, he spent most of his remaining years as an adjunct faculty member at numerous colleges, usually in the Providence region, and most recently at Rhode Island College. Approaching teaching with the belief that lives could be changed by the acquisition of admirable writing skills, he cared deeply about his students and also sought to ignite in them an appreciation for great literature and poetry.
He will be remembered for his gifts as a musician, teacher, writer, and friend, and for his ready wit and kind heart.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 2, at 2:00, at
Manning Chapel, Brown University, The College Green, Prospect Street, Providence, RI 02912
