Barbara Jean Dowler

Barbara passed away at Heatherwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Thursday April 26, after a brief illness.  Born in Newport, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Kathleen (Almy) Nelsen.  Proceeded in death by her 1st husband Orville “Bud” Dowler and her 2nd husband Carl Allen.  She is survived by her children: Wayne and his wife Debra, Rodney and his wife Maria, Karen and her husband Tom Furtado and Robert.  She also leaves behind her grandchildren: Seth, Emily, RJ, Chelsea, Joshua, Robert and Catherine.Barbara was a graduate of Rogers High School Class of 1947.  She worked for various stores as a sales clerk.  Her favorite jobs were GE, Newberry’s and Woolworths.  She also taught sewing classes.  She loved sewing, knitting and crocheting and she enjoyed watching westerns.  She was an avid fan of Frank Sinatra’s and was known to wear “bowties” to school.  Barbara and her husband Bud were members of the Middletown Town Howlers where they would get all dressed up and go square dancing.  They also enjoyed taking the kids on camping trips.In 1990, Barbara was diagnosed with breast cancer.  She was cancer free for 22 years.  She will be missed by her family and friends.Barbara’s family will be having a Celebration of Life to remember their mom at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at 30 Beacon Court.  Newport, RI.
