SGT Dennis Weichel Jr., a RI Guardsman deployed to Afghanistan has died. SGT Weichel, son of Dennis Weichel Sr. of Brockton, MA and Linda Reynolds of Cranston was struck on March 22nd by a moving vehicle in Jalalabad while pulling an Afghan child to safety. SGT Weichel was treated at a medical facility but succumbed to his wounds. A highly respected member of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team with the 25th Infantry Division, SGT Weichel epitomized the Army values of Duty, Selfless Service and Personal Courage by disregarding his personal safety to protect the life of an innocent civilian child. SGT Weichel is an inspiration to the Nation. SGT Weichel leaves behind fiancée, Ashley Rabon, and is survived by his son, Nicholas Weichel, and daughters, Hope and Madison Weichel. SGT Weichel also leaves behind numerous siblings, cousins and countless comrades in arms. Visitation will be Sunday, April 1st from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the Olson & Parent Funeral Home, 417 Plainfield Street, Providence, Rhode Island. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 2nd in Swan Point Chapel, 585 Blackstone Blvd., Providence, Rhode Island. Interment will follow at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemeteryin Exeter, RI. In lieu of flowers, donations in support of Dennis’ three children future college fund would be greatly appreciated.
