Joan L (Eastman) Poirier Obituary

Joan Lucille Poirier, 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of January 15, 2025.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on April 1, 1935, Joan was the beloved daughter of Gertrude (Jacobsen) Eastman and William Eastman. She graduated from Brookline High School and worked part-time as a bookkeeper.

Joan met her future husband, Arthur Poirier, on a blind date, where she was instantly charmed by his good looks and personality. They married in 1955, shortly before Arthur was deployed to Germany with the Air Force. Joan joined him overseas, and it was there that they welcomed their first child.

After their time in Germany, Joan and Arthur returned to the United States, settling in military housing in Malden, Massachusetts, where their family grew to three children. Seeking a permanent home, they eventually found the perfect house in Billerica, Massachusetts, where they raised their children: Debbie, Steven, and William ("Billy"). Joan devoted herself to being a homemaker while Arthur worked in Boston.

As her children grew older, Joan took on a seasonal position with the IRS, ensuring summers were free for family time. The family cherished annual vacations, saving all year to visit Disney, the World's Fair in Canada, Cape Cod, and enjoying countless summer days by their backyard pool.

Joan had a lifelong passion for modeling, attending Miss Allen's Finishing School during high school. At the age of 45, she pursued her dream, creating a stunning portfolio and landing modeling opportunities in the Boston area. Joan carried herself with timeless grace and elegance, a reflection of her true spirit.

As their children moved out and began lives of their own, Joan and Arthur decided to downsize and escape the harsh New England winters. They settled in sunny San Diego, California, where they both worked at General Dynamics for six years. Later, when Arthur’s position ended, they returned east briefly before ultimately moving to Las Vegas, Nevada. They loved the vibrant city, especially the convenience of not needing a car and the endless entertainment options. Joan and Arthur shared a passion for dancing and embraced all that Las Vegas had to offer, cherishing visits from their daughter whenever possible.

In their later years, Joan and Arthur returned to Cumberland, Rhode Island, to be closer to family. After Arthur’s passing in 2016, Joan remained in Cumberland, enjoying weekends with her daughter and finding joy in dancing at Plainridge Park Casino, where she was a beloved and familiar presence.

Joan and Arthur were inseparable for 61 years, living life to the fullest together. Now, Joan is reunited with her beloved husband, dancing by his side once more.

Joan is survived by her daughter, Debbie, of North Attleboro; her granddaughter, Ashley, her husband Ian, and great-granddaughter Nora of Canada; her grandson, Stevie, and great-granddaughter Valerie; her granddaughters Mindy and Jessica; her grandson Billy; her half-brother Rickey Eastman; and a host of cherished relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur (September 18, 2016), and her two sons, William (2010) and Steven (2015).

Joan will be laid to rest alongside her husband at the Bourne National Cemetery. A memorial service will be planned later this year to celebrate her remarkable life.
