Joel Edward Becker Obituary

Joel Becker, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, engineer, and lifelong advocate for social and environmental causes, passed away on April 2, 2026, at the age of 91.

Born and raised in the Bronx, New York, Joel grew up in a close-knit family rooted in strong values and community. He attended the Bronx High School of Science and earned his engineering degree from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. He went on to build a distinguished career as an electrical engineer, specializing in microwave antennas and radar systems for military aircraft.

Joel’s commitment to social justice began in the 1960s with efforts to promote fair housing on Long Island. He founded the Community Relations Council for Islip Town and later served on the Suffolk County Human Relations Commission. In retirement, he continued his service by creating a volunteer program that refurbished donated computers for individuals in need, earning national recognition.

He had a lifelong love of sailing, spending more than four decades exploring the East Coast, as well as a passion for travel, the outdoors, and jazz music.

Joel is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Dorothy; daughters Laurie and Wendy; son-in-law Michael; and grandchildren Shira, Sarah, and Josh.

Any donations in Joel’s honor may be made to The Familial Dysautonomia Foundation.
