John Arthur McKenney Obituary
John Arthur McKenney, 65, passed away on January 11, 2025, at Rhode Island Hospital. Born in Cambridge MA on March 18,1959, he was the son of Arthur and Helen (Kinnon) McKenney of Cambridge, MA. On March 23, 2018, he married his soul mate and beautiful wife, Jeanette (Hoffman) McKenney.
John graduated from Cambridge High and Latin High School and later proudly joined the United States Marines Corps in November, 1976. While serving his country, he learned culinary skills we all benefited from for year to come. After his discharge in October, 1979, he joined the United States Postal Service and retired in 2018 after a 30+ year career. He was a member of American Legion Club Post #87 Manhattan, Montana.
John, known as "Johnny Sunshine" when he was little, he would choose a new profession every Christmas.... one year a cowboy with full outfit of cowboy hat, guns, chaps and boots, next up construction worker with every Tonka truck from all the toy stores. Growing up a little more, he was GI Joe with full uniform, in which he never wavered.
John truly blossomed with his loving wife Jeanette, as they traveled the country together. They visited landmarks and ball fields. He even found a U.S. Post Office in McKenney, Virginia. They enjoyed the theatre. He took up gardening and building bird houses and OH "what he could do with a tire in the garden". He embraced his retirement and enjoyed his beautiful backyard and felt blessed to be joined with Jeanette's family. Together they brought him great joy and happiness.
John is survived by his mother, Helen McKenney of Cambridge, MA. He was blessed with a son, Michael (Katherine) McCrea and his grandchildren Jonathan and Matthew, and his step children: Kyle Ebright, Eric Ebright , and Katie (Jordan) Underwood. He will also be missed by his sisters: Kathleen (John) Bradley of Waltham, Maureen McKenney of Marlborough, Karen McKenney of Florida, Joan (Walter) Duffy of Woburn and Janet (Edward) Falone of Mattapoisett and many nieces and nephews.
John will be remembered as having a quiet soul, except about the Boston Red Sox. He was loud and proud to be a fan. Predeceased by father Arthur J. McKenney with whom he will be enjoying Opening Day at Fenway Park.
A Funeral Service will be held at RI Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter, RI on Friday, January 24, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. where John will be buried with full Military Honors.
