Marcia R. (Rubinstein) Lieberman Obituary
Marcia Lieberman (nee Rubinstein), age 89, of Providence, RI and formerly of Brooklyn, NY and Lexington, MA, died April 21 following a brief illness.
Marcia was born on April 15, 1936, and grew up in Brooklyn, the only child of Dr. Benjamin Rubinstein and his wife, Mina, who were both immigrants from Eastern Europe. She graduated from Barnard College and in 1966 received her Ph.D. in English from Brandeis University. She taught English at the University of Connecticut, Storrs for several years before moving with her family to Providence in 1978.
With her husband, the late Philip Lieberman, whom she married in 1957, Marcia traveled the world. She wrote several highly regarded travel books, including Walking Switzerland the Swiss Way. Articles based on her experiences traveling and hiking in both Switzerland and Nepal appeared in such publications as The New York Times. Her books and articles featured photographs taken by her husband. Marcia and Phil traveled together in remote areas of the Himalayas and collaborated on a photographic survey of 15th Century wall paintings found in the Buddhist temples of Mustang, Nepal.
For many years Marcia was the coordinator of Amnesty International's Providence group. She was a dedicated member of a women's journal-writing group for several decades and counted its members among her dearest friends. She also devoted many volunteer hours to improving educational opportunities for women and girls in Nepal.
Marcia had many hobbies, including running, reading, gardening, watching movies, and listening to music and attending concerts, especially Renaissance and Baroque music. She and Philip were also avid collectors of art, including Tibetan Thangkas and Inuit prints.
Marcia is survived by her sons, Benjamin Lieberman and wife, Nancy Waters, of Hudson, MA; and Daniel Lieberman and wife, Antonia Prescott, of Cambridge, MA; and her grandchildren, Eleanor Lieberman of Cambridge, MA, Isabel Lieberman of Philadelphia, and Samuel Lieberman of Washington DC. Burial was private. A memorial reception will take place on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 12:00 noon - 3:00 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church, One Benevolent Street, Providence, RI.
