Maria Avila Obituary

Maria Del Carmen Avila, daughter of the late Victoria Velásquez and Pedro Guerra, wife of the late Bernabé Avila and the last family member of the Guerra-Velásquez family, passed quietly on July 2nd at the age of 90, surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her children, Luis, Roberto, Haroldo, Carlos, Hector and Vilma (Lucky) and their spouses, as well as fifteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and countless nieces and nephews.

Maria raised her six children while working tirelessly as a seamstress in Guatemala. She immigrated to the United States in 1986 where she continued to work as a seamstress. Maria was grateful to be in America and became a US citizen to continue to support her children. She cherished the closeness of her family and loved spending time with them more than anything. Maria was well traveled and appreciated long road trips. She loved Mother Nature, enjoyed the thrills of amusement parks, and had a great sense of humor, making jokes right until the end. She excelled at English word search puzzles and was sharp in her math skills, despite her limited education. She was a strong, faithful woman who always persevered and overcame the obstacles that life threw at her. Maria leaves behind a great legacy of love, hard work and family values.

Join us in celebrating Maria's life on Wednesday, July 7th at Olson & Parent Funeral Home, 417 Plainfield Street, Providence, RI 02909 from 4pm to 8pm.  We welcome guests to wear colors to celebrate the joy that Maria brought to our lives.
