Thomas Ockerse Obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas Ockerse, beloved husband, father, and cherished college professor, who left us on February 25, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on April 12, 1940, in Bandung, Indonesia, he was the son to the late Louise Johanna Tideman and Willem Fedor Pieter Ockerse. Thomas's journey began in a vibrant and diverse setting, which would later influence his creative spirit and passion for graphic design.
Surviving WWII in a concentration camp as a child, relocating to Holland after the war, and ultimately emigrating to the United States as a teenager with his mother and younger brother, he found motivation and cultivated friendships through a new found love of swimming which lead to a full scholarship to Ohio State University. Marrying his high school sweetheart at the age of 23, he began his family at the age of 25 with the birth of his first of three daughters, Kirsten Ingrid (1965-1989).
Thomas dedicated his professional life to education, inspiring generations of students at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). His educational journey culminated in a master's degree from Yale University, which laid the foundation for a distinguished career in graphic design. With a profound belief in the power of creativity, Thomas not only imparted knowledge but also encouraged his students to see the world through an artistic lens. His influence extended beyond the classroom, as he embodied the very principles he taught-fostering innovation, self-expression, and the courage to explore new ideas. He is survived by his best friend and life partner, his devoted wife, Susan Ockerse, who stood by his side through the joys and challenges of life; his younger brother Gerrit Ockerse; his two daughters, Eerin Parente and Tara McIntire, who will always carry forward his legacy of creativity and kindness; and his four grandchildren Talia Parente, Nicoletta Parente, Liam McIntire, and Isla-Rose McIntire. Thomas's passion for art, his dedication to teaching, and his love for his family defined his life. He left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to engage with him, a mark that will endure in the hearts and minds of his students and loved ones alike. In honor of Thomas Ockerse's life, a memorial service will be planned at a time yet to be determined.
Family and friends will be invited to join in celebrating his remarkable journey and the artistic legacy he leaves behind. A cremation ceremony with scattering of his ashes will take place privately, in reflection of his wishes. As we remember Thomas, let us carry forward his spirit of creativity and his unwavering commitment to education. He will be dearly missed, but his impact will continue to inspire many.
