Timothy Mayne Empkie died peacefully at his home in Providence, Rhode Island on December 30, 2023. Kind and humble, Tim dedicated his life to service. He had a distinguished career in medicine highlighted by two years in the National Health Service Corps, a Masters in Public Health from Harvard University, time as teaching faculty and Assistant Dean at Brown University Medical School, and a decade spent coordinating health programs in Central Europe and the Balkans. In recent years he taught Brown freshman about health disparities in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Beyond teaching and patient care, Tim was a community activist at heart. He led efforts to stop construction of a stadium on park land in Providence and stood strong as a supporter of LGBTQ+ rights. Forever a basketball aficionado, Tim hooped from a young age finally serving as faculty liaison for the Brown Men's basketball team from 2017 until his death. Born in the Midwest, Tim spent his formative years on the East Coast landing at Princeton for college. He had a gift for conversation and maintained close friendships with people from every phase of his life. He found joy in family spending long summer days with his sister, nephews, and grand-nieces in northern Wisconsin where he will be laid to rest once summer comes again.
A remembrance will be held on February 3, 2024, from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. at Hope Street Pizza, 772 Hope Street, Providence, RI.
