Janet N. DeWitt advanced to her next great learning adventure on Saturday, December 8, 2012. Born in 1945 and raised in Winchester, Massachusetts, she lived much of her adult life in Fort Wayne, Indiana. But her heart was always on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean where she had lately lived joyfully in Newport, RI, not far from the daughters she gloried in, Julie and Debbie, and her newest family additions, Peter and Poppy. Although humbly unaware of her own gifts and contributions to the rest of us, the rest of the world, she was a one-woman think tank, investigator extraordinaire, forever in pursuit of the big answer. She’d often start the day with a phone call to her daughters or her friends with, “This is it! I’ve got it.” A highly intuitive teacher and generous, loyal friend, Janet listened carefully to us, as well as to her “little voice” which was the source of oh so many great adventures, and offered us wise counsel and much loving support in our own hearts’ desires. Goddess of the yard sale, master of upcycling, music lover, and the greatest cookie baker and ice cream flavor inventor on the East Coast, her creative, inquisitive self gloried in life, people, family, and learning new delights. The flowers, sun, water, wind, cliffs, and sand all spoke to her being and spirit. A grandmother at last, she was always amazed and touched by the mysteries of life. She was so much a whimsical mystery herself, a spiritual explorer, a lover of life. She has taken with her a piece of our hearts but we will carry on for her in the same spirit of love and adventure. A memorial service is being planned for this summer.
